Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Combat

Ki is the fight. Empty theirs, protect yours, then spend glowing Super and Soul gauges.

Combat System

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 combat is a 3D brawler with RPG loadouts, built so that Ki — not only hit points — decides who gets to show off. Bandai Namco’s September 2026 battle-system guide is the source for every mechanic on this page. The game is still upcoming for 2027; UI labels can change, but the loop is already specific enough to study. Pair this with Controls, How to Play, and the dedicated Awoken Skills page.

Ki, Perfect Guard, and Ki Break

Ki is spent on offense, defense, and panic tools. It drops when you take damage or spam Escape Vanish (L1/LB while you are being hit). If Ki hits zero you enter Ki Break: defenseless, ripe for the two “finish them” systems.

Perfect Guard is the answer. Hold Guard (R1/RB) and time it against the strike. A success:

  • Negates the hit
  • Restores a small amount of your Ki
  • Can reduce the attacker’s Ki

Lost Ki also regenerates over time, and Ki Charge (R2/RT + L2/LT) is a dedicated refill that also feeds the Awoken gauge. You should not live in Ki Charge during a rush, but you should use it after a knockdown or when a teammate is reviving someone.

Step Dodge (R1/RB + left stick) also costs Ki if you miss. A clean dodge refunds Ki, resets cooldowns, and dumps you into a counter. That cooldown reset is why dodge timing is an aggressive skill, not only a panic button.

How you empty the other bar

Health damage still wins missions, but the intended route is to force Ki Break first. Official methods:

  • Heavy Attacks (Triangle/Y), especially charged Heavies — they shave more Ki than Lights
  • Ki Drain-type Super Attacks (example mapping: R2/RT + Circle/B as Split Finger Shot in the default kit)
  • Defense Breaker-type Supers against people who hold Guard
  • Slamming bodies into walls or floors during combos
  • Launching in a chosen direction so the next hit is an environmental smash

Once they are Ki Broken you unlock:

  • Critical Strike — a cinematic Super or Ultimate follow-up while the matching icon is glowing. Massive damage, and it fills Potential Meter faster.
  • Break Rush — Boost Chase (L1/LB) to close in, then a charged Heavy. Rapid-fire rush, also heavy damage, also feeds Potential Meter.

Chaining Break Rush into Critical Strike is the published high-damage route. Filling Potential Meter faster is how you reach Soul Switch or Awoken sooner. That is the combat reason to care about Ki even when the boss still has a fat health bar.

Super Attacks, Ultimate, and Soul Assist

You bring four Super Attacks, one Ultimate Attack, and one Soul Assist. Each sits on a gauge. Using one starts a cooldown that varies by skill.

  • Super Attack: hold R2/RT plus a face button. Examples: Galick Gun, Kamehameha. Four secondary families exist: Defense Breaker, Ki Drain, Critical Strike, and utility such as Energy Charge (no damage; shortens other Super cooldowns while active).
  • Ultimate Attack: hold L2/LT + Triangle/Y. Examples: Super Kamehameha, Giant Storm. Longer cooldown, bigger swing.
  • Soul Assist: hold L2/LT + Square/X when the Assist gauge is full. Two families: independent summons that can appear while you are taking damage or in Ki Break, and sync assists that hit harder or buff but cannot be called during hitstun. Up to two charges can store; cooldown returns one charge at a time. About 130 characters can teach assists. See Soul Switch for the Assist versus Switch distinction.

Do not fire a Critical Strike-type Super into a full-Ki boss and call it a rotation. Save glowing Critical Strike icons for Ki Break. Use Energy Charge when the fight is a marathon and your four Supers are all cooking.

Soul Switch versus Awoken in a fight

Potential Meter max + L2/LT + Circle/B transforms you. Character creation forces an exclusive choice:

Soul Switch replaces your Super and Ultimate kit with the Super Warrior whose soul you housed. You look like them, you fight like them, and you are not locked to your avatar race. One soul equipped at a time.

Awoken Skill keeps your own attacks and instead shifts you into a stronger race form. You can stay awakened indefinitely while Ki remains. Hitting Ki Break or emptying the Ki gauge pops you back. After the first awaken, letting the gauge refill lets you awaken again into a higher level and restore HP a second time. Producer interviews after Gamescom 2026 confirmed the old transformation timer was removed after demo feedback.

Both options fully heal on activation and speed Super cooldowns. The combat implication: Awoken is a Ki-management stance; Soul Switch is a borrowed-character burst. Rankings for the burst option live on the Soul Switch tier list. Race awaken paths live on the race tier list.

Movement tools that extend combos

  • Boost Chase (L1/LB): rush the current target; combine with Light/Heavy to extend.
  • Assault Vanish (Triangle/Y): teleport to a launched enemy for a smash-down or send-away.
  • Jump / double jump / flight: Cross, then Cross again, then Cross a third time to fly.
  • Ki Blast: hold Circle/B and tap for Smash Ki Blasts. Abilities like Double Shot can multiply this.

Fighting Style swaps idle, flight, step, guard, and combo animations as a package — Ginyu, Recoome, Whis, Hit, and Piccolo were named as examples among 130 styles. That does not change Ki rules; it changes which strings the right-side HUD is hinting. Pre-launch style notes are on the fighting styles tier list.

Example abilities that change the fight

Official examples, not a complete list:

  • Saiyan Mettle: All Abilities — all stats up after revive
  • Backflip — consecutive backsteps become a flip dodge
  • Double Shot — one Ki Blast burst fires twice as many shots
  • Flash Strike: HP Recovery — HP regen after a Critical Strike
  • Breaker: Technique — skills cool down faster after you inflict Ki Break
  • Melee Counter — Perfect Guard versus melee heavily drains their Ki

Abilities can be race-locked, outfit-passive, or Soul-linked. Build them on character creation, not in the middle of a glacier mission.

What this page will not invent

We will not publish fake Super Saiyan Ki thresholds, damage percents, or frame data until Dimps does. Polygon’s hands-off demo noted a Saiyan reaching Super Saiyan 3; that is a form existence confirm, not a stat table. When numbers appear in an official patch, they will land here and on the news timeline.

Next: memorize the controls chart, then decide whether your 2027 main is an Awoken Android or a Soul Switch Vegeta using the roster.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Super Saiyan still have a timer in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3?

No. After demo feedback, Awoken Skills last while you have Ki. Ki Break or a zero Ki gauge ends the form. See Soul Switch for the exclusive-or versus race awakens.

What is Ki Break?

Ki Break is the empty-Ki stun state. You become open to Break Rush and Critical Strike. Perfect Guard, Ki Charge, and not spamming Escape Vanish are how you avoid it.

How do I do the most damage after a wall slam?

Force Ki Break, Boost Chase into a charged Heavy for Break Rush, then fire a glowing Critical Strike Super or Ultimate. That sequence is in Bandai Namco's own combat article.

Can I use Soul Switch and Super Saiyan together?

No. Customization lets you equip Soul Switch or an Awoken Skill, not both. Plan that fork on character creation.
